Galaxy Mergers: When Galaxies Collide, What Actually Happens? What Would It Look Like?


Galaxies that move around through the Universe at times can cross path’s with other galaxies.  They are Known and characterized as Galaxy Mergers. Since the stars and planets in each of the massive galaxies are so distanced apart, they don’t hit into one another. Imagine the size of the galaxies for you to be able to comprehend millions of stars and planets crossing each others path’s without ever touching one another. A star that hits another star is a very rare event. The pressure and magnetic force that is caused by the galaxies crossing path’s, permits us to capture astonishing photos that show us the interaction of all the many gases and dust particles. The dust and gas meet face to face when these galaxies merge into one another. Causing all that we see in deep space when we gaze into the heavens.

In this photo of deep space I had the amazing chance to catch a visitor entering or crossing through or in front of the Constellation Of Scorpius. The photo shows the Massive Star System Al Nyat.

Dschubba – (Delta Scorpii) – HD143275 – HIP78401 – HR5953. Dschubba (Delta Scorpii) is a blue subgiant star that can be located in the constellation of Scorpius. It is the 78th brightest star in the night sky. Delta Scorpii is the Bayer Classification for the star.

Sigma Scorpii – (σ Sco, σ Scorpii), also named Alniyat, is a star system in the constellation Scorpius. This system has a combined apparent visual magnitude of +2.88, making it one of the brighter members of the constellation, although greatly outshone by its neighbor Antares. Based upon parallax measurements made during the Hipparcos mission, the distance to Sigma Scorpii is roughly 696 light years (214 parsecs). The brightest component of the system is a double-lined spectroscopic binary, which means that the pair has not been resolved using a telescope. Instead, their orbit is determined by changes in their combined spectrum caused by the Doppler shift. This indicates that the pair complete an orbit every 33.01 days and have an orbital eccentricity of 0.32.
The primary component of the spectroscopic binary, σ Scorpii A, is an evolved giant star with a stellar classification of B1 III. It has around 18 times the mass of the Sun and 12 times the Sun’s radius. This star is radiating about 29000 times the luminosity of the Sun from its outer envelope at an effective temperature of 26150 K. This is a variable star of the Beta Cephei type, causing the apparent magnitude to vary between +2.86 and +2.94 with multiple periods of 0.2468429, 0.239671, and 8.2 days. During each pulsation cycle, the temperature of the star varies by 4000±2000 K.

SCORPIUS CONSTELLATION – is one of the constellations of the zodiac. Its name is Latin for scorpion, and its symbol is. Scorpius is one of the 48 constellations identified by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the second century.

CONSTELLATION OF OPHIUCUS: is located between Aquila, Serpens and Hercules, northwest of the center of the Milky Way. The southern part lies between Scorpius to the west and Sagittarius to the east. In the northern hemisphere, it is best visible in summer. It is located opposite Orion in the sky. Ophiuchus is depicted as a man grasping a serpent.

 GALAXY MERGERS: can occur when two (or more) galaxies collide. They are the most violent type of galaxy interaction. Although galaxy mergers do not involve stars or star systems actually colliding, due to the vast distances between stars in most circumstances, the gravitational interactions between galaxies and the friction between the gas and dust have major effects on the galaxies involved. The exact effects of such mergers depend on a wide variety of parameters such as collision angles, speeds, and relative size/composition, and are currently an extremely active area of research. Galaxy mergers are important because the merger rate is fundamental measurement of galaxy evolution. The merger rate also provides astronomers with clues about how galaxies bulked up over time.
